an environmental education and retreat site nestled in the Cascade foothills of Whatcom County

Blue Mountain Farm is a private residence nestled along the South Fork of the Nooksack River at the base of the Twin Sisters wilderness. The Farm was purchased in the summer of 2006 by Ken and Mariann Carrasco, who are fish and wildlife biologists, respectively.

The vision of the Farm is to:

  1. permanently preserve timbered land in the Puget Sound lowlands for the benefit of wildlife and humans; and,
  2. provide a venue where organizations and agencies can conduct environmental education or similar events. The farm will provide a site where people can experience and learn about nature, explore sustainability, and engage in personal development.

The Farm is not being worked, except for a small garden and pasturage for our own horses, and consists of 40 acres of forest and floodplain on the banks of the South Fork of the Nooksack River. The timber and development rights of almost 30 acres of the land is now in a conservation easement held by the Whatcom Land Trust, and the Trust also owns adjoining land. This step will ensure that the land will be allowed, forever, to continue into old-growth successional forest.

We will offer both day use for up to thirty people and overnight lodging, bunkbed style, with sleeping arrangements for up to twenty. We will be able to provide meals on-site with seasonal, locally-grown foods. Our facilities include a large meeting room/dining room and a newly constructed yurt for many types of meeting arrangements. All of this is located in a peaceful setting with beautiful views of the surrounding forest and meadows with ponds. Available at the lodging area are a jogging trail around the meadows, hiking trails for the more intrepid exercisers, a hot-tub, an exercise room and a pingpong table, and campfire rings for those warm evenings. Off-site, several trails are in the area, and the South Fork of the Nooksack River touches one corner of the property and is available for your enjoyment.

By the way, we admire the work which our predecessors, Bill and Jennifer, were doing on the property and we encourage their guests to continue their relationship with the farm. However, we will not be hosting social events such as reunions, company parties, or weddings because of our interest in maintaining a quiet home for wildlife.
